Flight of Fallen Eagle- or Falleneagle, as he was also called- sat stiffly upright, scenting the breeze as it carried the refreshing scent of salt and fish toward him. It was just before Sunhigh, and the late Greenleaf sun was warm on his brown tabby pelt. Greenleaf had been good to Breaking Waves this year, with long, lazy days of laying out on the sand, and relatively few incidents with Falling Stones, their rival. Falleneagle remembered with sorrow the couple from Falling Stones that had intruded for some unknown reason, and had been found drowned near the camp. The she-cat had smelled of milk, what had become of her kits?
The longhaired tom wondered if anyone else was going to join him. Sure, he was Breaking Waves' Healer, he was important, but he wasn't really close to anyone. In all actuality, he was quite shy. However, he passed it off as unfriendliness, and no cat got too close if they could help it. But lately, Falleneagle had becoming lonely, craving companionship. At the very least, he wanted someone to talk to, which was why he was sitting out here in the first place. It was an unusual thing for the golden-eyed Healer to do, maybe someone would come up and ask if anything was wrong.
Or maybe he was going about this friendship thing all wrong, were you supposed to initiate the conversation yourself? If that was so, the tom was going to have a large problem. Unless he was helping to heal someone, he could barely say a sentence without becoming embarrassed and stammering unintelligibly. He'd never had a real friend in his life, the other kits had stayed away from him because he wasn't Tribe-born, he'd been found on the beach, abandoned at only a few moons old. Of course, Falleneagle had tried to strike up a conversation with a few likely-looking kits, but he'd stammered so much they'd just laughed and turned away. As a to-be, he'd been apprenticed to the Healer, and had avoided his tomentors as much as possible, immersing himself in his work. And now here he was, a full Healer he'd always dreamed of being, but still alone.
Cutting of the painful reminiscience, Flight of Fallen Eagle stared at the camp entrance, beyond which he could hear the steady lapping of the waves, and continued to hope that maybe some cat would come through it and talk to him.

Ever sat at the entrance to her den her pearly green eyes watching the changing emotions on Eagle's face. A tiny smile of sympathy touched her face. She stood up and stretched lusciously. Her silvery pelt sparkled in the sunlight. “Morning!” she called, trotting over. The Healer had always been so distant; she thought it was finally time to reach out to him. “It’s a very nice day. Though I’m not a big fan of heat.” She yawned, and leaped up on one of the bushes. It was difficult to balance on the prickly branches, but the view of the water of spectacular. Jumping down gracefully after getting tired of the sharp leaves poking into her paws, she glanced back at Eagle, a curious glint in her eye.
It was unlike him to go outside and just sit there. Usually, he completely lost himself in his work, sometimes only pausing to eat and sleep. Ever did enjoy what she did, but also took breaks to talk with the Clan and go swimming. Something she really wanted to do now. Maybe she would go later on, in the evening when the water would have had time warmed up. After all, it was a beautiful day and it should feel wonderful after such a lot day. Maybe she should invite Eagle. He was always getting left out. Star should come too. It would be a nice tribe bonding time. Of course, she hadn’t seen much of Star these days, so maybe just Eagle.
She knew from her previous trips out to the sea that there was a spot where the sand bar was always extremely shallow. When the tide was out, it even poked out of the water. Since it was high tide now –she hadn’t seen the sand bar when she had jumped up on the bush- it would be exactly low tide just before sunset. Perfect. “Hey,” she meowed, sitting down next to Eagle. “I was planning on going down to the beach this evening. You should come! You’re always coped up in that den of yours, so why not enjoy a little free time?” She paused. “I was thinking about asking Star, so don’t think you’re getting special treatment!” She laughed. “Just kidding.”
She hoped he knew what she was kidding about.

Falleneagle jumped as a bright meow of "Morning!" came from behind him. But it wasn't danger, it was the answer to his prayers, Ever was actually speaking to him! This was his chance. . . The brown tabby swallowed nervously and meowed quietly, "Morning to you t-too Ev-ver." The weather was a safe subject, why was he so scared? "Um, yes, bit hot i-isn't it? I-I mean, I'm all right b-but you aren't. Well, at least I t-think s-so, cause you m-mentioned i-it. The heat, n-not that you w-were hot. B-Besides, we're out in the op-pen, it's c-cooler in the sh-shade. . ." He trailed off. This was going terribly. She must think he was a dimwit or something.
But then, Ever invited the tom to go swimming with her later! Falleneagle immediately perked up, maybe she did like him after all! "Th-thanks Ever!" he managed to stutter out, yellow eyes as bright as the sun. Fre time was an alien word to him, but maybe it would be fun. "Um, E-Ever? Can I a-ask you a stupid que-question?" the tabby healer added as an afterthought, somewhat confused. Her joke was lost on him.
"Who else is here? Who's Star? Are Cliff, Rush, and Jumper still younglings? . . . I. . . I haven't been outside in a while. . ."

Ever blinked a couple times. Eagle wasn’t usually this… stutter-y. If that makes any sense. “Um, Ever? Can I ask you a stupid question?” the healer ended up asked. “What is it?” she asked as normally as she could and trying to keep a straight face. He couldn’t really be this awkward, could he? After all, they had talked before right? She couldn’t remember. “Who else is here? Who’s Star? Are Cliff, Rush, and Jumper still younglings? … I … I haven’t been outside in a while …”
Was he just pranking her, or did he seriously not know who Star was? And Cliff, Rush, Jumper… Weren’t they those trainers who went out to the water and never came back? And how long ago was that? “Star is a hunter, the only one here. And those guys… are, um… Frankly, they’re missing. No one knows where they got off to…” Her green eyes focused on some point off in the distance and stiffened. It couldn’t be easy for Eagle to take this news. And he doesn’t know the worst part – it was at least three or four moons ago that this had happened. “But maybe they’ll show up again.” She smiled a little, hiding her doubt.

The brown tabby could see the confusion in his leader's eyes as she answered his question, and he licked his chest fur to hide his embarrassment. Apparently that had been a REALLY stupid question. . . He really couldn't think of anything to say on the subject of Star, so he just mumbled something about "Good, getting sort of hungry these days. . ."
And then the big news hit him. Cliff, Rush, and Jumper were gone. Missing, dead, whatever, he was free! Falleneagle leapt to his paws, eyes brightening. "Yay!" he yowled without thinking, swishing his tail ecstatically. Then the healer realized what he'd done, and sat back down, embarrassed again. "I mean, th-that's sad and all, but th-they t-tormented me a l-long time ag-go and. . ." The tom remembered his bullies as he'd last seen them, several moons ago. Cliff, a big brown guard-in-training, with rippling muscles and beady, hate-filled yellow eyes. Rush, a scrawny, abnormally strong, black-and-white tom with blue eyes. And Jumper, a beautiful black tabby hunter-to-be with bright green eyes. Once a billion years ago, Falleneagle had fancied her, but then one day she and Rush had turned up obviously together, and she'd joined in the "fun" her boyfriend took part in.
"Dead." Falleneagle repeated this word a few times, relishing in it. "Cliff, dead. Rush, dead. Jumper, dead. Jumper's kits. . ." He realized he had said this out loud. "Never mind that, Ever. She was expecting Rush's kits." Hmmm, this talking wasn't quite so hard. Talking about his old enemies wasn't hard either. The words came easily now. "Um, how long ago was this?" The tabby attempted a smile, but merely looked like he had something stuck in his teeth.

Ever couldn't help but smile at Eagle's happiness. So maybe this news wasn't so hard to give after all. "Ah, tormented you? Well, obviously they didn't know you were going to be in a position where you could make them clean out all the dens and give them herbs to make them sleep all day!" She purred gigglily. The healer was a lot easier to talk to like this then before. He wasn't stutter-y and much more... interesting to watch. Okay, that doens't make much sense, but whatever.
He smiled awkwardly while asking when this had happened. "Um, two or three moons ago I think. Something like that. I can't really remember..." He started talking about them dead, and didn't stop him. Personally, she had been thinking they were dead since the day after the search parties came up empty. Since the search parties all consisted of just one member - Ever herself.
She touched her tail to Eagle's shoulder kindly. "I'm happy you can now sleep easy at night. Its always better to remove enemies - in whatever way possible." She certainly knew that from experience.

Falleneagle was almost ecstatic. "I-I was allowed to do that?! Seriously?" He noticed Ever watching him somewhat strangely, like he was an interesting bug crawling over her paw, and instantly stopped smiling. Yep, he was being weird again. Probably not even fit to be healer. He knew it. Anxious to distract his leader from his strange whatever-it-was-he'd-done-this-time, the brown tabby tom mumbled hastily, "Yeah, that's about when I found them muttering." Well, maybe Ever would need to know this sort of stuff. maybe he should keep talking.
"Well, they all left camp and went down to the beach, acting kinda suspicious. So I followed them, maybe they were planning some sort of torture for me I needed to be able to protect myself against. I hid myself in a dying bush and listened. Cliff disappeared for a few heartbeats, and he came back acompanied by the smell of death. I peeked around the bush and saw the bodies of two dead cats, Breaking Waves cats. Swirl of Pink Petals and Rock Tumbles Into Sea, I think. They were nice to me. Swirl had been pregnant, and I knew Rock was not the father. Rush kinda looked shifty and stuff, but Cliff and Jumper were too engrossed in discussion to notice. Cliff and Rush had killed them both the previous day, you remember everyone assumed Swirl was having her kits out in the territory, she never had really liked the nursery. Cliff was freaked, he needed to get rid of them fast before anyone noticed they missing. Jumper suggested throwing them into the ocean, far enough out so that they wouldn't wash back up on shore. Well, the only place that was possible was Eagle's Point, that crumbly, dangerous little jag thing that sticks out over the deep water. They decided to do it tomorrow night, and Jumper said she'd tell anyone who asked that she'd been to see Swirl and that they were doing fine, but one of the kits hadn't been so strong, so she was waiting a few days before coming back. "I didn't know they'd actually done it. But I do remember about a moon later I was gathering some herbs around Eagle's Point, and noticed the edge seemed to have crumbled into the ocean. Didn't think nothing of it, there had been some storms that moon. I never knew what became of Swirl and Rock's bodies, and after that I didn't really come outside, knowing that my enemies were now murderers."
The yellow-eyed healer shivered suddenly, speaking about his tormentors scared him somehow, as if their ghosts could hear him from the depths of the ocean and were making plans for revenge. Or something. "Well, what say you find Star? Maybe we could spend the day on the beach or something. I-I'll go get some food and meet you there." Then, without another word, Falleneagle took off to his secluded den, scooping up pawfuls of catnip as an excuse- he had way too much anyway, it had practically overgrown most of Eagle's Point, they could waste some for a fun day. Only once he'd piled a large palm tree leaf with fresh-kill and catnip and set off for the beach did the healer realize that Ever probably still thought he was weird. Really, this friendship thing was much harder than he'd thought, and that had been hard in the first place!
((should we have the party here or in another thread? oh and could i make a skin? the two we've got make it hard for me to read.))
